What water-filter certification actually tells you
Look for the exact model and the specific substances tested—not just a certification number.
The numbers are not a score
NSF/ANSI 42 addresses aesthetic effects such as chlorine taste and odor. Standard 53 addresses specific contaminants with health effects. Standard 401 addresses certain emerging compounds. A higher number does not mean a better filter.
The claim matters
Certification does not mean a filter reduces every substance covered by a standard. Check the exact certified model and its listed reduction claims. A certification for one model or for materials alone cannot establish another product’s contaminant reductions.
How this affects our answers
We explain the verified reductions in ordinary language and keep the source details available under Why this filter. A missing claim means we cannot use it to recommend that product; it does not, by itself, prove the product fails a test.
